Final Project Essay

91.5 The Impulse is known as WWLR and it is a student run program that is housed on the campus of Lyndon State College at 1001 College Road, Lyndonville Vermont. It has an output of 3,000 watts and reaches all of Caledonia County Vermont and most of Coos County New Hampshire. Students are able to pick a time slot of two hours a show and can create whatever type of show they want. The students have a variety of show types ranging from heavy metal to talk radio and they cover everything in between. Students gain real world experience with the station because 91.5 The Impulse is always updating its music library and giving students the opportunity to grow as radio personalities. The station WWLR does not format its programming other than its two hour show block, and as a result of this the faculty, staff, and student members are permitted free-reign over what music they play or what topics they wish to speak about. The Impulse helps its DJs gain real world experience with its state of the art production room which houses equipment allowing students to manage and produce station promotional material, station identification, and promotional show material. The production room houses high end non-linear audio editing technology allowing students access to professional quality sound effects and industry standard editing for voice recordings and lyrics. While learning about broadcasting and the technical aspect of running a station, DJs who desire to step up a notch can by being involved with management positions. This shows students what its like to run a real radio station in a true business setting. Members gain the radio experience of broadcasting to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, and by streaming shows live on the Internet.
